The Unofficial Guide to Transformers, by J. E. Alvarez
Many wonderful pictures, including the box art and the packing cards (unfortunately not all are mint condition).
Being an unofficial guide, it also pictures some Takara transformers that can only be found in Japan.
No detail descriptions on the individual toy on their bio and history. Moderate descriptions is given on the generation of the toys (i.e. G1, G2...) as a whole.

Pictures include the toy itself and the loose accessories that comes with the toy. This is a book you must have to ensure that your Transformer you are bidding on ebay is really complete.
I recommend this book is a must for all transformers fans as a reading material.

Transformers Field Guide by Mark Bellomo
Wonderful pictures but no detail descriptions and tech bio on the individual toys.
This book is just a field guide as mentioned. It should work in conjunction with Mark Bellomo's Transformer Identification and Price Guide for the detailed information.
