The backs have an adhesive property that is meant to be a safety feature that keeps the rugs from slipping on the bathroom floor. They probably seem normal to other people - but it was marking my brand new tile bathroom floor. I won’t return them for refund, but I put my old rugs back on the floor. As I said - it’s probably OK for most users.
