Describing the item's condition

Is your item new or used? Does it include the original tags, packaging, or manuals?

Item condition is one of the top factors buyers consider when deciding whether to purchase an item. When you create your listing, let your buyers know exactly what they'll be receiving by specifying its condition.

Note: It's important that you specify the condition accurately in order to avoid violating our selling practices policy.

Specifying the item's condition

When you create your listing, you'll be given the opportunity to specify the item's condition. Note:  In many categories, item condition is required.

To specify the item's condition:
  1. When listing your item, select the condition of your item from the Condition drop-down menu.

    Although the options vary by category, the Condition drop-down menu lets you specify the item's condition. For example, the condition choices for clothing include New with tags, New without tags, New with defects, and Pre-owned.

  2. If your item isn’t new, you’ll see a Condition description field. In the Condition description field, provide additional details about the item’s condition, such as whether it has defects, missing parts, scratches, or other wear and tear. You have up to 1,000 characters.

We encourage you to use the condition description for all of your notes about your item's condition. (Please don't use the item description for this.)

Advantages of specifying the item's condition

Listings that specify the item's condition provide useful information and as a result, are more likely to sell.

When you specify your item's condition, you:

Help buyers make an informed purchase decision.
Item condition appears at the top of your listing. If you provide a condition description, a portion will appear at the top of your listing, and the full description will appear within the item specifics section.
Help buyers find your item.
When buyers search for items, they often use the Refine search column to narrow their search based on the item's condition. Select the appropriate condition from the Condition drop-down menu when you create your listing to help buyers find it.

What "new" means

An item is considered "New" when it meets the following guidelines:

  • It's in the original condition from the manufacturer, distributor, or retailer.

  • It hasn't been refurbished or used for any purpose.

  • It has no known defects or damages.

Handmade or custom-made items that have never been used for any purpose can also be considered "new."

How to include more details about the item's description

As a seller, you can use the condition description field to help buyers learn more about the condition, age, and history of your item. This is where you should enter any details about the item's condition.

  • Does the item have any flaws or defects?

  • Is the item in its original packaging as found in a retail store or was the item packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging?

  • Has the packaging ever been opened?

  • Does the item ship with all manuals, accessories, and additional documents?

  • If refurbished, was the product inspected, cleaned, and repaired to meet manufacturer specifications?

  • Does the item have a valid warranty that can be passed on to the buyer?

  • Does the item have an expiration date (for example, in the Food & Beverages or Health & Beauty categories)?

  • Does the item have store tags attached (for example, in the Clothing, Shoes & Accessories category)?

  • Does the item come with any certificates (for example, in the Jewelry & Watches category)?

  • Is the item fully operational or does it require service or repair in order to function properly?
