Although he'll always be known first and foremost as the lead singer of Van Halen, David Lee Roth forged a successful solo career after splitting from the band in 1985. And since some of his solo releases were better than others, 1997's THE BEST proves to be a solid introduction and overview of Roth's work. At a whopping 20 tracks in length, all the expected DLR standards are featured--fun covers of "California Girls," "Just A Gigolo," and "Tobacco Road," as well as the white hot rocker "Shy Boy," and the expected hits ("Yankee Rose," "Goin' Crazy," "Just Like Paradise"). Also included is a brand new song, "Don't Piss Me Off," as well as the new wave-esque "Stand Up," and two surprisingly laid back rockers, "Big Trouble" and "Ladies Night in Buffalo." While some longtime fans may wonder why such strong album tracks as "Knucklebones" and "Hina" aren't included, the tracklisting is near-perfect, making THE BEST a superb summary of the Diamond one.
