SynopsisTakach: 50 years traces the remarkable arc of Takach Press founder Dave Takach's life and chronicles the tremendous influence of his life's work-and that of his family-on the printing scene. Born during the depths of the Great Depression in rural Wyoming, young Dave in quick succession joined the U.S. Air Force, married, and applied his considerable mechanical skills working in machine shops: in Illinois, Colorado, and, finally, in New Mexico. It was in 1961 that Dave, wife Helen, and their young children left Fort Collins, Colorado, for Albuquerque, where he took a job at the University of New Mexico's Mechanical Engineering Department. While working there, Dave enjoyed a serendipitous, life-changing encounter with a unique printmaking organization, the Tamarind Institute, that introduced him to the world of fine-art printing and led to the creation of his press-making business in 1975. In the ensuing half-century, detailed in Takach: 50 years, Dave (now 92 years old) has never printed art using his own company's presses and has never pretended to be an artist. But he and his firm loom large in the worldwide community of printmakers who rely on Takach Press's high-quality products-and three generations of Takach expertise and dedication-to work their magic on the presses.
