In Stories of Hope, the girls and young women of the Wema Centre share their experiences of struggle, perseverance, forgiveness, and optimism in the face of hardship. These biographies and their accompanying pictures give readers insight into the complex realities of children who worked and lived in the streets or who were precariously housed. The result is a collection of powerful, diverse accounts of life on the streets of Mombasa, Kenya, journeys to the Wema Centre, and dreams for the future. Author BiographyFounded in 1993, the Wema Centre is a registered NGO that was created in response to the increasing number of street children in the coastal region of Kenya. Since then, Wema has reached over 10,000 children through community outreach, education and vocational training programs. Wema currently has two children's homes; a boy's home and a girl's home. Michelle M. Johnston was an intern at the Wema Centre from May to August 2012 and was involved in interviewing, transcribing and editing the book. She has plans to return to Mombasa in June 2014 to continue working with the young women who have exited the Wema Centre.
