Prince may have been booed off stage when he opened for the Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1981, but White rock fans became more and more receptive to soul, funk and rap as the 1980s progressed. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who can take some of the credit) exploded, everyone from Primus to Faith No More was incorporating funk. Another worthwhile band that came out of this funk-rock fusion of the late 1980s and early '90s was the obscure Heads Up!, which showed some promise on Soul Brother Crisis Intervention. While the blistering alternative rockers are more rock than funk, traces of everyone from Funkadelic and James Brown to Jimi Hendrix are an appealing part of their metallic, thrash-influenced sound. Many of Heads Up!'s lyrics are open to interpretation, but on "Big Mama," they make a crystal-clear statement in favor of environmentalism. Those who like their metal and hard rock with a taste of funk would do well to hunt for this overlooked CD. ~ Alex Henderson
