French director El�onore Faucher offers a downbeat look at life in her feature-film debut, SEQUINS. Claire Moutiers (Lola Neymark) is the troubled 17-year-old at the center of Faucher's tale. Five months pregnant, Claire wiles away her small town days by working at the local grocery store, then indulging in her passion for creating intricate embroidery patterns in her spare time. But as her body begins to change shape, Claire decides to keep her pregnancy a secret, only confiding in her doctor and best friend Lucile (Marie Felix). Knowing the news will rock the residents of her small town, Claire quits her job and consoles herself by spending time with Lucile, who is tending to her brother's injuries from a motorcycle accident. At the same time, Claire looks for another job. Fortunately she finds one that will afford her a degree of anonymity, as she hooks up with Madame Melikian (Ariane Ascaride), a local clothing designer. Delighted at being able to shield her pregnancy from local town gossips while also being paid for her embroidery skills, Claire's happiness is cut short when she discovers that the accident which injured Lucile's brother is the same one that ended the life of Melikian's son. Together the two plunge themselves into their work in a desperate attempt to blot out the problems in their lives, forming a tender bond in the process. A delicate film which gently works its way towards a comforting conclusion, SEQUINS is an intelligently written, slowly paced film that serves to illustrate how solace can sometimes be found in the most unlikely places. An impressive debut from Faucher, the film was the recipient of the Critics' Week Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
