SynopsisThe excavations conducted by Theodor Wiegand on behalf of the Berlin Museums in Milet in Asia Minor rank among the great archaeological achievements at the beginning of the 20th century. In less than 15 years, Wiegand succeeded in bringing to the light of day again a whole city from antiquity with its streets and squares, its sacred sites and market-places, public buildings, sports facilities, baths and technical infrastructure. Wiegand also extended his researches to the surrounding countryside and neglected no epoch of the city's history. In 1906 he established the series publication Milet - Results of the excavations and investigations since 1899. The individual volumes - each complete in itself - deal with the buildings and monuments uncovered by the excavations; the studies also deal with the landscape of Milet and the surrounding countryside. While the series opened with details of the architectural monuments excavated, future volumes will focus on the individual finds from Milet, from the inscriptions to the lamps and the sculptures. The series is arranged by systematic criteria, and thus the volumes do not appear in chronological sequence., Die von Theodor Wiegand im Auftrag der Berliner Museen durchgef hrten Ausgrabungen im kleinasiatischen Milet geh ren zu den gro en Leistungen der Arch ologie am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. In weniger als 15 Jahren gelang es, eine antike Gro stadt mit ihren Stra en und Pl tzen, ihren Heiligt mern und M rkten, den ffentlichen Bauten, Sportst tten, B dern und technischen Einrichtungen wieder ans Licht zu bringen. Wiegand bezog auch das Umland in seine Forschungen mit ein und vernachl ssigte keine Epoche der Stadt. 1906 begr ndete er die Publikationsreihe Milet- Ergebnisse der Ausgrabungen und Untersuchungen seit dem Jahre 1899. Sie behandelt in abgeschlossenen Einzelb nden die Bauwerke und Denkm lerkomplexe, die durch die Grabungen wiedergewonnen wurden; eingeschlossen in die Betrachtungen sind auch die milesische Landschaft und die weitere Umgebung. W hrend die Reihe mit den ausgegrabenen Architekturdenkm lern der Stadt er ffnet worden war, steht zuk nftig die Ver ffentlichung der Einzelfunde der Miletgrabung - von den Inschriften ber die Lampen bis zu den Skulpturen - im Mittelpunkt. Die Reihe ist nach systematischen Kriterien angelegt, die B nde erscheinen deswegen nicht in chronologischer Reihenfolge.
