Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century, the expansion pack to Railroad Tycoon II, the 1998 Strategy Game of the Year (Computer Games Strategy Plus and CNet Gamecenter), takes the experience to new heights by giving the player an option to play eighteen new campaign scenarios that focus on three distinct eras. The first era spans 1939 to 1950 and incorporates World War II efforts and strategies by the Allies, including England, the United States and Russia. The second era brings the player into modern times and runs from 1950 to the next millennium (2005). The final era presents challenges related to a changing environment that includes melting ice caps that wreak havoc throughout the world. This strange new changing world deals with potentially disastrous environmental issues in the years 2005 to 2030. <br><br>Scenarios run the gamut from the war torn environments of the mid-1900s, to an underground tunnel linking England and France in the fading decades of the 20th century, and finally to futuristic (and all too possible) landscapes molded by global warming in the early 21st century. Most of the stand-alone scenarios are geared for use not only by single players but also in multi-player mode. The game features improvements and enhancements such as new rail car types (troop cars, alcohol carriers, moving weapon bases, etc.), beefed up operational controls, modernized architectural elements (e.g., power plants, airports, town houses, weapon factories, etc.) and no less than five new locomotives.<br><br>The expansion pack requires installation of the original Railroad Tycoon II and at least 1024x768 resolution capability. Whether rebuilding the British railroad system after the devastation inflicted by the German Blitz in WWII or creating a light passenger rail system in Seattle as the 20th century comes to a close, most fans of the series will welcome the new and varied challenges of Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century.
