Based on the book The Way Things Work, this CD-ROM game teaches players about a number of different scientific concept as well as showing how many ordinary objects that we use everyday function. Players can either explore the machines shown in the program, or attend "Mammoth School," where players must answer five questions on each of a variety of concepts to master each concept. Narration is provided both by animated QuickTime movies that show how various parts work, and by showing David Macaulay himself as he explains the principles that make some of the objects work. In addition, as in the book, the addition of mammoths to the instructions puts many of them into terms a young player can understand. "Mammoth Movies" illustrate a number of concepts, and include one showing how computers work.
