Sony's NFL GameDay series makes its third appearance on PlayStation 2 with a new graphic engine featuring high-resolution players and action designed to move at 60 frames per second. Borrowing a page from its gridiron competition, GameDay 2003 offers players a chance to build a team from the ground-up and play for 20 consecutive seasons. NFL GameDay 2003 also supports the Network Adaptor, allowing for multiplayer competition between two to eight players as well as in-game chat functions, roster updates, performance rankings, and live stats.<br><br>Modes of play include Preseason, Season, Tournament, and General Manager. Preseason allows players to customize a single game by selecting the two teams, stadium, weather, and jersey types. Roster changes can be made with the Front Office option, where players can edit an athlete's appearance, create up to 40 new players with varying abilities, or opt to create a "Super Player" using the attributes from the top stars in the league. The drawback to creating such a player is the high salary requirements associated with signing the star to a team's roster.<br><br>Other roster options include starting lineup edits, substitutions, trades (which must be evenly matched), a 50-round player draft, and the ability to sign and release players. Season mode follows a 16-game format with Pro Bowl voting and MVP awards. Tournaments consist of 8 or 16 teams, while General Manager mode has players dealing with franchise issues such as salary caps, free agency, retired players, and an option to import seniors from NCAA GameBreaker 2003. A play editor feature is also included, allowing would-be coaches to edit existing playbooks and change the personnel involved in each play.
