At the beginning of the game, you choose which of the two characters to play, although you cannot swap between characters during a playthrough. Each character will traverse across the same levels but will take different paths. While X may take a high path, Zero can cut a path through a blocked lower level. In "X5," you can once again switch between both characters. Mastering each character is the only way to uncover every hidden secret in the levels. As you battle against Sigma, the story will change depending on the choices you make. The gameplay in "X6" is still largely the same; this title places emphasis on rescuing captured allies. Defeating the first three games in this compilation unlocks a hidden seventh title, "Mega Man Battle and Chase." This title is a kart racing game featuring characters from the series. With seven total titles, "Mega Man X Collection" has more than 30 hours of gameplay.
