Mars Matrix by Sega Dreamcast takes place in the year 2039, when the Earth Federation has sent a fleet of experimental airships to stop the uprising taking place on the Red Planet. In this vertical scrolling, 2D shooter game, players must confront an enemy onslaught and face insurmountable odds across six game stages. Gameplay consists of three basic attacks taking place between two different ships, and centers around the Gravity Hole Bomb, a device that’s self-replenishing and enables players to absorb, accumulate, and ultimately be able to make use of enemy bullets. Play modes include Elite, Arcade, Strategy, and Score Challenge. All modes enable players to accumulate scores that are converted into cash, and that can be used in the game’s Secret Shop. Each alien you destroy earns you cash that you can spend in the Secret Shop, to unlock new bonuses and go deeper into the game. Players should be prepared to go through Mars Matrix by Sega Dreamcast several times before being able to unlock everything, like better speed, vortex attack fast-reload, and ultimately a new hyper hardest mode. The game is pretty typical for a shooter with single, two-player, or co-op mode, as well as firepower upgrade items, and gigantic bosses in every level.
