In the crucial years following the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49, an aristocratic family, related to the legendary poet and hero Sandor Petofi, desperately tries to live up to the myth that surrounded him. His widow has married a man who can not live up to the image of her martyred husband, while his syphilitic son has run away, revolting against the family. Suddenly, a rumored cholera epidemic becomes a shattering reality when it tragically touches the family. Longing for a heroic new epoch, the banality of the present overwhelms them.
