NotesBIOGRAPHY Randy VanWarmer exploded onto the music scene in 1979 with his hit song 'Just When I Needed You Most.' Released on the Bearsville label, it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and crossed over to the country charts. Written when he was 18, it became an international success, and has become a classic and enduring presence to this day. Randy went on to write such #1 hits as the Oak Ridge Boys 'I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes, ' Alabama's 'I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)' and Michael Johnson's 'I Will Whisper Your Name.' Over the years, artists across multiple genres, such as Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, Conway Twitty, Kenny Rogers, Charley Pride, Laura Branigan and Billie Joe Royal, have benefited from Randy's songwriting talent. We sadly lost Randy in 2004, and 6 years later, several 'rehearsal' tracks were discovered in his studio, which are presented here on this CD entitled "Just When I Needed You Most". These 'work tapes' were used to prepare for live shows and were mostly recorded in his studio. But the beauty and the clarity of his angelic voice and music needed to be shared. Add to this the 10 tracks from the CD "The Vital Spark" which was never released in the U.S., and contains the #1 hit song "I'm In a Hurry (And Don't Know Why) and this CD offers the listener 19 of Randy's most memorable songs. Born in Colorado in 1955, Randy loved Sci-Fi movies and Star Trek, and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. But at the age of 12 his father died in a car crash and his mother decided to relocate her four sons to Looe, in Cornwall, England. He became a fixture at local café's and began to write songs, among them the future smash hit that would make his name. He recalled the dark and rainy winters in Looe, saying "it's not hard to write a really sad song in the winter in Cornwall.. I would write 5 or 6 songs & take them 250 miles to London (by train) knocking on publishers' doors." Eventually a publisher named Ian Kimmet, liked what he heard and signed him to legendary manager and record mogul, Albert Grossman of Bearsville Records. He moved back to the U.S. in 1978 & settled in Bearsville, NY, the home of his new label. Grossman's plan was to release a VanWarmer single called, 'Gotta Get Out of Here, ' a mildly catchy pop tune. The B-side was a little song called 'Just When I Needed You Most.' Somewhere, a DJ decided to play the flip side instead, and it slowly rose to the Top 10 in a market saturated with disco. He recorded 4 albums for Bearsville-Warner Brothers Records between 1979 and 1984. In 1982 Randy moved to Los Angeles, and his wife, Suzi Blosser (a former record executive for ABC Records and Warner Brothers) sent one of his songs to a friend in Nashville. When the Oak Ridge Boys took his 'I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" to the top of the country charts in 1984 he moved to Nashville becoming a well respected member of the city's music community. This was the perfect environment for his talent and he was a much sought after songwriting partner and friend. Randy continued recording and releasing albums on 16th Avenue Records in the U.S. and JVC Victor in Japan, interspersing recording with live appearances in the U.S., the UK and Japan. His final project was one that he was very excited about. He recorded new arrangements of the Stephen Foster classics, and planned to have some 'friends' come and add their tracks. But in January of 2003 Randy was diagnosed with Leukemia. He fought for a year with unwavering hope and determination and never complained. He was more concerned about Suzi than himself and always maintained that beautiful, childlike joy and wonder. He marveled at the strides that the medical community was making and was excited and positive about his upcoming stem-cell transplant. This vital spark of life is what drove Randy, and helped those around him cope with the tragedy of his illness. What a lesson he taught us all. Randy sadly passed away on January 12, 2004 at t
