It's time to take on and conquer the soccer world in Konami's International Superstar Soccer 99 for Game Boy Color. Play as or against one of 32 international teams in four different modes of play as you attempt to win the International Cup and earn the title as world's best. Three modes of play exist: a one-player game, a two-player game, or International Cup. In the one- or two-player games, users can compete in an exhibition match or attempt to survive a penalty kick shootout. Games can be set to half lengths of three, five, or seven minutes, and users have the option of choosing the preferred type of overtime, either Golden Goal or Extended Time. Fouls can be turned on or off, and the computer level can be set to Easy, Normal, or Hard. The Member Select screen allows users to pick which players are in the starting lineup and which ones ride the pine, based on scoring, shooting, retain rate, retrieve rate, and speed attribute rankings. This screen also provides updates on the players, the amount of penalty cards attained, and injury condition. Also, from the Formation and Strategy setting screens, users can decide how they want their team to line up and how aggressively or passively they will play. Games are decided by using the right moves and techniques on both offense and defense. In the former, the A button is used to pass (either a floating or rolling ball flight), while the B button can be used to place a shot on goal, center the ball from the corner, or simply clear the ball out of a team's own end. Conversely, on defense, the A button causes the player to make an attempt at intercepting the ball, while the B button performs slide tackles and headers. At any time, players can be substituted by pressing the Select button, and strategies changed by pressing the Start button. Got the skills to compete around the globe? Choose the International Cup option and let the struggle begin. Your selected country starts out as the 32nd ranked team in the world, and the first match is played against the team ranked directly in front. A loss sends the user's team down in the rankings and a win a notch up. This formula continues, with a game every week, until either a year has gone by or the elusive top spot is achieved. At the end of each month, a password is displayed allowing users to resume their progress. Matches in this mode are three minutes long and include no overtime.
