Author Biographywater. Mrs. Mac retired from teaching after a 42 year career on the Mommy track while raising five children. She taught in small public country schools in Missouri and Iowa, a public school in a union town in Indiana, a private school for dependents of American oil company employees in England, a pre-school she ran in her home, and public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a firm defender of a child-centered developmental approach to education, allowing children to access curriculum as it is appropriate to their own individual growth patterns. Her primary passion was for teaching English as a second language. She is concerned about the current trends in education towards emphasizing standardized testing and pacing schedules. She emphasizes a more holistic approach to education, where children spend more time learning to ask the right questions than filling in answers to multiple choice questions. Her philosophy of education runs counter to many current educational practices. She includes in this book many of the lessons she learned during her career, several of the activities that hopefully helped her students become life-long learners, and some of the more humorous anecdotes from both children and parents. She hopes that other teachers, parents, and anyone working with young children can learn from her experiences.
