This book considers the incorporation of certain aspects of the human visual system - perceptual organization - into computer vision systems. The author poses perceptual organization as an energy minimization problem, presenting new ways of calculating the Gesalt laws of organization. Aimed at developing a computational model of perceptual organization, an area much studied by visual psychologists, the book demonstrates how insights into human vision are seldom exploited in machine vision, despite the possibility of having a considerable pay-off in terms of vision performance and reliability. Applying a new approach to recursive organization, the use of multi-space representations for emergent properties are explored and a method of combining Gesalt laws discussed.
