The History Channel's Civil War: The Game offers players a chance to recreate historical confrontations between the North and the South or accept the challenge to change history by altering the outcome of specific battles. The turn-based action occurs on 3D battlefields with authentic weapons, uniforms, and environments whenever opposing forces meet. Using a map screen as the staging area, players can choose to place units for either side within the historical borders of the war or utilize a free-for-all mode with unlimited placement of troops. Players can earn money by controlling specific cities, recruit new units at forts, and utilize railroad travel to move troops if the tracks are contained within friendly regions.<br><br>In addition to single-player action against computer-controlled forces and the Change History challenge mode, options include two-player competition via LAN, Internet, or "hotseat." Players control infantry, cavalry, and artillery units, as well as commanding generals to lead the fight, with success depending on savvy resource management, key unit deployment, and strategic timing. Bonus materials include photographs from the Library of Congress Civil War collection, artwork by renowned Civil War artist Don Troiani and other notables, video footage of battle recreations, timelines, and important historical documents from the era.
