The protagonist lives in the vault number 101. The game begins when, at the age of nineteen, the protagonist leaves the Vault 101 in search of father, James, one of the most respected scientists in the community who has escaped into the outside world. He left the Vault and discovers that radiation in the outside world are drastically decreased, allowing the survival of some communities of human beings.
