When used at full strength, Extreme Chess designers claim that the Fritz engine on which the program is based is stronger than 99.9% of all chess players in the world (circa 1995). Since the program defeated World Champion Garry Kasparov and IBM's chess computer Deep Blue to become the World Computer Chess Champion in 1995, the boast is not an idle one. Touted as a "no frills" program, the game nonetheless has completely customizable (size, angle, lighting, shadows) 3D boards and chess sets as well as standard adjustable 2D perspectives. <br><br>The huge array of user adjustable options in the game include features such as a 50,000 game database (annotated by various grand masters), capacity to download or save games in PGN or CBF (ChessBase Format), a 16-function database module that allows for in-depth analyses of a vast number of historical games or your own, "on-the-fly" analysis as you play, adjustable advice levels from a built-in coaching module and totally customizable chess engine opponent strengths in nearly a dozen "personality" traits (specifics on how you want the game to play and at what level). The game also includes a pre-programmed group of nine "opponents" with varying characteristics, personalities and strengths.<br><br>On-line help files that cover every facet of the program are extensive and comprehensive. The interface is totally mouse point-and-click in conjunction with extensive menu options and optional keyboard move input is supported. A rating and assessment feature provides you with a current Elo rating after each tournament or blitz game and fully adjustable options are available for controlling all standard time/move parameters. Personal annotations, replays and print facilities are supported.
