ReviewsQ (9/02, pp.101-2) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Her voice is effortlessly comforting and she's one to uplift rather than dwell....creatively she's in fine fettle."
Additional informationPersonnel includes: Beth Nielsen Chapman (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Bonnie Raitt, Andy Bey, Vince Gill, John Prine, John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris. Producers: Beth Nielsen Chapman, Annie Roboff, Tommy Simms, Carmen Rizzo. Engineers include: Danny Duncan, Mark Chevalier, Gary Paczosa. CD contains 3 bonus tracks. Beth Nielsen Chapman has rather a bit in common with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Besides having three names, she successfully blends an introspective, almost cerebral singer-songwriter sensibility with a broad-strokes contemporary country flavoring, adding touches of folk, rock, and pop to varying degrees along the way. That's the template for DEEPER STILL, an album that comes after the longest layoff to date in Chapman's recording career and finds here none the worse for the wear. Her engaging, pliable voice is the perfect instrument to relay these songs about reconciling one's soul and spirit (as on "Shake My Soul" and the opening tune "World of Hurt") with the sometimes-unpleasant realities of modern life. No matter how nitty-gritty the lyrical scenarios get though, Chapman always has some soothing sonic balm at the ready, in the form of a gorgeous chorus or an especially appealing turn of melodic phrase, making everything seem okay again in the end.
