ReviewsWhat could be good about an era that began with great numbers of homeless and hungry people? This gave America the opportunity to show that it could and would build a great and powerful nation based on people caring for and supporting their neighbors. Even Al Capone set up a soup kitchen to help the needy. Times were so bad that chain letters, bootlegging, bank robberies and kidnappings were all considered viable sources of income. Needless to say, none of them were successful on a regular basis. It wasn't until Roosevelt became president and created the New Deal legislation that there was an attempt to end to poverty in the United States. His programs were successful, and people began to live again. This brought back to life Hollywood, the arts, sports, science, technology and medicine. These became great times for Lindbergh, Earhart, Temple and Ruth. The Hindenburg failed and medicine succeeded. Unfortunately, war was not far behind. At the end of the decade, the world was watching Hitler and waiting to see what role the United States would play. This book and the others in its series, "Decades of the 20th Century," will find their way onto my classroom bookshelves., Children's Literature

SynopsisWhat do Shirley Temple, the New Deal, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Hindenburg, Amelia Earhart, and Jesse Owens have in common? Each, in some way, helped define the 1930s, a period marked by widespread poverty, isolationism, and economic setback during the Great Depression. Author Stephen Feinstein describes the triumphs, tragedies, fads, and fashions of the decade from President Herbert Hoover to Babe Didrikson, from the game Monopoly to the horror of Kristallnacht.
