This well-loved, Oscar-nominated piece of pop art trumpets the timeless virtues of classic Americana represented by small towns, Route 66, and cars. Pixar founder John Lasseter serves as both writer and director of "Cars," his company's seventh animated feature. It's about a cocky but charming race car named Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) who travels west for a showdown. Along the way he finds himself stranded in a small desert town where he learns to appreciate the slower, simpler values of middle America. This Blu-ray disc captures many details, such as car stickers and headlights, vividly in 1080p. Sound quality is excellent in 5.1 Dolby Digital and racing scenes use both surround sound and LFE. Viewers can hear the unmistakable voices of the other main characters: Paul Newman, Cheech Marin, Bonnie Hunt, and Larry the Cable Guy. This Blu-ray disc includes extras like commentaries by Lasseter and the production team, deleted scenes, cartoon featurettes, and a cool feature called Cine-Explore which allows viewers to see production factoids while watching the movie. However, the most enlightening extras are the documentary shorts that describe the extensive source material behind making this movie a true car-lover's piece. Viewers learn, for instance, about the contributions of many NASCAR drivers as consultants and even voices for the 117-minute animated movie. With its extensive soundscapes and Pixar animation, "Cars" is the kind of movie best suited to Blu-ray.
