All the major printer manufacturers are now shipping product with the new IEEE 1284-1994 parallel ports. This exciting new standard was developed to support high speed bi-directional communication between computers and parallel printers. Cable assemblies complying with the new specifications must be manufactured with special low capacitance, impedance-matched, twisted pair, double-shielded cable. The wiring of the cable assembly has also been modified and a new connector type, 36-position micro Centronics, has been developed as part of the specification.
