Barbie Pet Rescue has players on a mission to find and save 14 animals wandering around the fictional village of Green Arbor Park. From the confines of the Pet Rescue Center, players can respond to calls reporting lost animals as well as care for rescued animals by playing games with them or attending to their medical needs. The ultimate goal is to return each animal to its rightful home.<br><br>After receiving a call at the Rescue Center, players race to the scene from a side-scrolling perspective in one of Barbie's vehicles, a convertible, pick-up truck, motorboat, or scooter, which varies depending on the location. These sequences involve steering the vehicle away from objects as well as jumping over obstacles to safely reach the area. Barbie will then walk across three screens until she finds the missing animal.<br><br>Once back at the Rescue Center, Barbie can monitor the critter's status using two horizontal meters representing happiness and health. To improve an animal's health, players must administer the correct treatment, while happiness is improved by playing one of three mini-games: Critter Keep Away (a game of catch), Rascal Run-Around (a maze game), and Snacktime Challenge (a tile matching game).
