Reviews'In this new incarnation, James/Elliott can continue to serve as an indispensable tool in fruitful competition with Hennecke.'James D.G. Dunn, University of Durham, Theology, Sept/Oct, 1994, 'This handsomely produced volume provides a useful reference tool for English translations of New Testament apocrypha. ... this should prove to be a very useful English introduction and translation to a significant portion of what is called New Testament apocrypha.Stanley E. Porter. Journal for the Study of the New Testament 55 (1994), 'Elliott has greatly increased the value of the volume: he has replaced James' archaizing English style of translation with a modern translation ... In this new incarnation, James/Elliott cam continue to serve as an indispensable tool in fruitful competition with Hennecke.'James D.G. Dunn, University of Durham, Theology, 'is is good to have this excellent replacement which takes account of recent discoveries.'The Expository Times, 'The canonical pages contain defensible material; this volume shows us what happens when pious imagination runs riot without the constraints of a credible theology.'Canon Michael Perry, Church Times, ' ... he has replaced James' archaizing English style of translation with a modern translation, including a standard brief introduction to each text, and provided valuable and fairly detailed bibliographies in the pattern of the companion volume on The Apocryphal Old Testament, edited byH.F.D.Sparks. In this new incarnation, James/Elliott can continue to serve as an indispensable tool in fruitful competition with Hennecke.James D.G. Dunn. University of Durham. Theology, 'The book is beautifully produced, in good clear print, and well set out, and, for all its more that 700 pages, is very convenient to handle. Comparison with the old James reveals that there has been considerable rearrangement, but it has been judiciously done and for good reason. ... this isa book that will serve the needs of students for many years to come.R. McL. Wilson. Journal of Theological Studies. Vol. 45 No. PE2. Oct '94, 'It is a book aimed at making the texts widely accessible...the translations are, wherever possible, revisions of James. The reader who knows James as well will find the new book to be not altogether unfamiliar territory...The book is spaciously laid out and pleasing to hold and to read.'Reviews in Religion and Theology, "An essential work for students of the New Testament and related literature."--The Journal of Religion"[The book] has been beautifully produced with very useful bibliography accompanying the selections, and it will be an important reference work for every college and seminary library. The editor has created a worthy successor to James and has placed all students in his debt."--Southwestern Journal of Theology"[A] fascinating source of information....Dr. Elliot...has done the groundwork and readers are able to benefit from the results of his research without the task of wading through the secondary literature for themselves....An easy to consult, conveniently-sized volume."--Churchman"Elliott provides excellent bibliographies....Elliott has done a superb job of organizing a varied corpus of materials and improves on the scheme he inherits from James....Elliott has performed an invaluable service to all scholars of the apocryphal literature, especially English speakers who heretofore have limped along with James's superannuated collection....Elliott's masterful edition of James not only makes James obsolete, but perhaps at the same time shows that the project of a truly representative single-volume compendium of New Testament apocrypha has become obsolete as well."--Bible Review"Valuable and fascinating."--History Today, 'it is good to have this excellent replacement which takes account of recent discoveries ... The most obvious improvement is the size of the page and the elegance of the type and presentation. It is a splendid production in the best traditions of Oxford University Press ... it is an excellentupdating of James and will serve its purpose well: 'to allow readers access to the contents of this vast range of literature without over-burdening the translations with excessive textual or critical notes'.'The Expository Times, Volume 105, May 1994, "An essential work for students of the New Testament and related literature."--The Journal of Religion "[The book] has been beautifully produced with very useful bibliography accompanying the selections, and it will be an important reference work for every college and seminary library. SynopsisThis collection of apocryphal texts supersedes the best-selling edition by M.R. James, which was originally published in 1924. Several new texts have come to light since 1924 and the textual base for some of the apocrypha previously translated by James is now more secure, as in several cases there are now recently published critical editions available. Although a modest addition to James's edition was made in 1953, no thorough revision has previously been undertaken. In this volume, J.K. Elliott presents new translations of the texts and has provided each of them with a short introduction and bibliography for readers who wish to pursue further the issues raised in the texts or to consult the critical editions, other translations, or general studies. The translations are in modern English, in contrast to James's deliberate imitation of the language of the Authorized Version. The collection is designed to give readers the most important or famous of the Christian apocrypha and a small sample of gnostic texts. Full translations of the earliest texts are printed, as well as some derivative apocrypha., THOROUGH REVISION This is the first ever thorough revision of Oxford's best-selling edition of the Apocryphal texts, first published in 1924. NEW MANUSCRIPT DISCOVERIES Keith Elliott has incorporated the many new manuscript discoveries made this century to present new translations of the texts in modern English, providing each with a concise introduction, and a bibliography pointing to critical editions, other translations and general studies. Full translations of the earliest texts are printed, as well as some derivative apocrypha. This up-to-date collection provides the most important or famous texts of the Christian Apocrypha, plus a small sample of gnostic texts., This collection of apocryphal texts supersedes the best-selling edition by M.R.
