Preface; The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the non-profit sector in Ghana today. It is the first such overview aimed at the general reader and donor, though it draws on a number of specific reports and studies. The report begins by providing some contextual information about Ghana, its system of government, economy and people. It then offers a more detailed survey of the current scope and scale of non-profit sector activity in Ghana, attempting to illustrate the range of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), sources and scale of funding, relations with government and factors within the wider environment such as legislative and taxation issues. A lack of published statistics makes it difficult to be exact in many cases, but the authors have attempted through primary research to provide reasonable estimates where necessary. Two shorter sections highlight some of the needs of the non-profit sector in Ghana and also offer guidance to donors as to ways in which support can be provided. The Gazetteer section provides more detailed information about some of the key sectors in which NGOs operate, and highlights areas of need. Finally, a list of useful organizations is provided.
