480 Crosswords tests your ability to play with words just as in traditional crossword puzzles where you must fill in empty squares with letters to form words according to the clues. Clues run across and down and are accessed by simply clicking the mouse in a box containing the word you want to solve -- a double-click changes direction from horizontal to vertical and back again by highlighting the appropriate squares. All games are timed and scored.<br><br>Clues, as well as a number of gameplay options, are shown in the area adjacent to the puzzle. For example, selecting the picture of a crossword puzzle gains access to the open/load pop-up screen where each puzzle is numbered; an asterisk denotes those successfully completed. Other options include saving a game in progress, printing the current puzzle or selecting from among several tile sets. Layouts include blank tiles, classic (blue handwritten letters), kids play (red with printed white letters), a led display with red digital letters, plate (gray with black letters) and Scrabble-style tiles. Each player is also assigned a face (selectable), ranging from a grandmotherly visage to a robot head, with associated scores listed beneath.<br><br>Several help options are available. Click on the puzzle with a light bulb and you get the first letter or a variety of different letters to a difficult word.
