Synopsis
My interest in space began in 1979, on a miserable January day in Houston. There were thunder, lightning, heavy rain, cold and fog-simultaneously-a meteorological phenomenon possible only in Houston. At the time, I was editor of the L-5 News, a job I got on the strength of my knowledge of English grammar and my willingness to work for slave wages. I had slogged to the Shamrock Hilton that day to cover a space presentation at a large science convention only because I could not convince someone else to do so.
