About this product
Product Information
Author George Orwell's bleak vision of the future was encapsulated in his novel, 1984, which pointed towards a society where thoughts and actions are controlled by an overbearing government. Orwell's frightening prediction of the future was first published in 1948. Fast forward to 2004--exactly 20 years after Orwell's predicted date of societal meltdown--and documentary filmmaker Robert Kane Pappas draws on Orwell's work to make some very real comparisons between the contemporary American media, and the worrying world of 1984. Pappas believes that the major media corporations of the early 21st century are largely responsible for shaping peoples' views and opinions. To illustrate this, he focuses his attention on television news programs, alongside a few brief forays into newspaper and radio industries. Pappas proposes that these news shows are undemocratic behemoths that foist the partisan ideals of their owners onto an unsuspecting public. By offering examples of stories that screamed out to be major headlines, but were instead buried on a lowly news crawl running rapidly across the bottom of a CNN screen, Pappas makes some discomforting parallels between current news media and the propaganda machine of Nazi Germany. While doing this he intersperses his points with highly appropriate excerpts from Orwell's novel, and draws on testimonies and experiences from fellow documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, former news reporters Charles Lewis and Greg Palast, and a variety of other sources. Highly unsettling, ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE suggests that the bulk of 1984 has already made the journey from fiction to fact.

- i***c (42)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseOverall, the buying experience was very good. The shipping and packaging of the book was great. However, I noticed a little bit of a damp-stain on the dust jacket, and maybe on the back cover. I think the book was exposed to a little bit of moisture, but overall the book was as described, and the price was great. Thanks for a smooth transaction.Pietro Corsi - The Age of Lamarck (University of California, 1988) 1st Evolution (#396511880821)
