Directed by Ingmar Bergman at the age of 30, TO JOY is a classic early work of his--exploring the themes of relationships and the role of the artist. It tells the story of Marta and Stig (Maj-Britt Nilsson and Stig Olin) who perform in the same orchestra. Their conductor is played by Victor Sjostrom, an actor, writer and director, perhaps most famous for WILD STRAWBERRIES. Stig is a new and ambitious member of the orchestra and soon falls for the beautiful yet reserved Marta. They have a happy relationship and soon marry and have children but the relationship is jeopardised when Stig starts an affair with another woman. This film is very moving, and particularly powerful in evoking Marta's distress and torment.
