"Lule's writing, as always, is splendid--melodious, picturesque, and seamless. Reading this book was like having global vacations that unremittingly inspire deep learning and critical thinking about the role of media. This third edition is a welcome and timely update, with more diverse voices worldwide reflecting the historical and current state of the media, political events, and economic structures. A wondrous resource for a global audience of students and scholars." --Roselyn Du, California State University, Fullerton "Globalization and Media offers a comprehensive, lively, and insightful introduction to the complex field of global media studies. Impressive in its historical sweep, its geographical coverage, and its theoretical depth, the book avoids easy dismissals or celebrations of media globalization. Instead, Jack Lule concentrates on both the promises and the pitfalls that globalization poses to modern human society--all the while demonstrating the central role that media have played in the globalization processes for centuries. (Previous Edition Praise)" --Timothy Havens, University of Iowa "This book offers a lucid, amazingly engaging, and carefully balanced overview of key issues and cutting-edge debates on globalization and media. With fascinating stories, colorful tidbits, and witty analysis, Jack Lule skillfully unpacks the media's central and conflicting role in the multifaceted processes of globalization. The writing is simply superb." --Yuezhi Zhao, Author of Communication in China: Political Economy, Power and Conflict "Very readable and wide-ranging in its scope and scale. . . . Jack Lule's book is an extremely useful resource for global media studies. A treat for students and teachers." --Daya Thussu, University of Westminster, Lule's writing, as always, is splendid--melodious, picturesque, and seamless. Synopsis
The fully updated third edition of this lively and accessible book argues for the central role of media in understanding globalization. Indeed, Jack Lule convincingly shows that globalization could not have occurred without media. From earliest times, humans have used media to explore, settle, and globalize their world. In our day, media has made the world progressively "smaller" as nations and cultures come into increasing contact. Decades ago Marshall McLuhan prophesied that media technology would transform the world into a "global village." Slowly, fitfully, his vision is being fulfilled. The global village, however, is not the blissful utopia that McLuhan predicted. Nor, in a more modern formulation, is the world flat, with playing fields leveled and opportunities for all. Instead, Lule argues, globalization and media are combining to create a divided world of gated communities and ghettos, borders and boundaries, suffering and surfeit, beauty and decay, surveillance and violence. By breaking down the economic, cultural, and political impact of media, and through a rich set of case studies from around the globe, the author describes a global village of Babel-invoking the biblical town punished for its vanity by seeing its citizens scattered, its language confounded, and its destiny shaped by strife., The fully updated third edition of this lively and accessible book argues for the central role of media in understanding globalization. - j***2 (61)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchase☆☆☆ Seller. Is not the picture of actual recieved item. Listing photo was pulled from internet and used as placeholder, according to sellers listing. Thats on me for buying the cheapest one without looking at listing fully. Would have been better to not use another persons photo on seller's listing as the specific guide book advertised has reflective bits, the one i recieved did not.. At least it arrived and is decent enough to use and look at. Packed ok. Shipped promptly. Thank you.Pokemon Platinum Version: The Official Pokemon Guide (#396979033428)
- k***i (38)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseFantastic price, faster shipping than expected, item as described. However, packaging was a thin plastic envelope instead of bubble/ cardboard. Book arrived new yet slightly damaged. Not worth asking for a return due to the very low price, yet would suggest to seller/ future buyers to have better packaging for shipping. Thanks.
- e***u (4506)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseWell the stock photo was just that, a stock photo and the item did not include the other material shown, which I had asked about. A chance you take. Otherwise, in good shape, shipped promptly, plastic bag envelope (nothing wrong with that for the price, but subject to beatings by the PO dolts. Yes, i will still buy from them if the price is reasonable.
