Reviews
The Académie du Vin Library is an important publication of wine literature... every work is a must for wine lovers.
Synopsis
Peter Vinding-Diers is a Danish aristocrat turned roving winemaker who, on escaping his studies at the Sorbonne one summer found himself on Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, suddenly besotted. Peter's first foray into wine took him to the Cape (via a quick turn parachuting into the war-zone in Vietnam), where he learned vineyard ways and wine science. Next came a dazzling decade in Bordeaux, where his pioneering exploits began to catch the world's attention. He then ventured to Bulgaria, Brazil, Spain, Chile and Hungary earning himself the title 'Flying Winemaker' (he was one of the first!). Along his wine journey, Peter has frequently had to call on his Viking ancestors for help - not least in taming his 'Montecarrubo' vineyards on the wilder side of Sicily - but whether by accident or by design (mostly the latter), he has always found himself at the forefront of vinous discovery..., Peter Vinding-Diers, Danish aristocrat turned roving winemaker, made his first foray into wine in South Africa following a tour parachuting into war-torn Vietnam. After learning the art of classic winemaking in the Cape, he then spent a dazzling decade in Bordeaux where his pioneering exploits began to catch the world's attention. Bulgaria, Brazil, Spain, Chile and Hungary came next, earning him the title 'Flying Winemaker'. Along his wine journey Peter has frequently had to call on his Viking ancestors for help but, whether by accident or design, he has always found himself at the forefront of vinous discovery... With tributes to Peter from: Simon Barlow, Anthony Barton, Olivier Bernard, Adam Brett-Smith, Jean-Michel Cazes, Elizabeth Ferguson Berger, Rudolf von Freyberg, Johnny Goedhuis, Hugh Johnson, Tony Laithwaite, Fiona Morrison MW, David Peppercorn MW, Iver Rantzau, Etienne le Riche, Eben Sadie, John Umberto Salvi MW, Peter Sisseck, Serena Sutcliffe MW, Steven Spurrier, Miguel Torres, Bruce Tyrrell and NK Yong. Book jacket., A great read of the roller coaster life of one of wine's most uncrushable optimistic and opinionated Mavericks! For me, it's his tribulations and triumphs in Bordeaux that shine.'
