About this product

Product Information

In early 1861, Florida was a rural frontier state that had joined the Union just fifteen years before. Its population of 140,000 was by far the smallest of any of the states that formed the Confederacy. Nearly 63,000 of the population were African Americans, most of whom were slaves working in an agricultural-based economy. The majority of the white population was relatively poor and rural. In the 1860's a Northern newspaper referred to Florida as, "the smallest tadpole in the dirty pool of succession." Prologue It's best I tell their story. Their story is my story, our lives woven together by the threads of history. When Thomas married Louise in 1855, he adopted me and we became a family, sharing the stories that shaped us, stories that would be told and retold the way families do. At eleven, I became the man of the house when Thomas, a Lieutenant in the 3rd Florida Infantry, left to rendezvous with the Western Army of the Confederacy. I was at his side when we defended Tallahassee at the Battle of Natural Bridge, driving back the Union troops, saving Tallahassee and making it the only unoccupied capital in the Confederacy. I watched Thomas climb the steps of the Florida Capitol, as a Representative and a Senator. Thomas would tell me, "Henry, I believe the measure of a man is how he answers when duty calls." The Florida Constitution in 1885 was his last call to duty. My favorite book when I was growing up was Thomas's diary. It inspired me to learn to read. Like a pirate who found a buried chest, I couldn't wait to discover the treasure it held. I have recited every story in my mind a hundred times over to keep their voices from fading. This tale is mine to tell. I heard the Capitol had been remodeled in 1902 and I took my grandson to see it. We were traveling on the St. Augustine Road just about sunset when we saw a glow. The Capitol had a new dome that glistened in the setting sun. As we got closer, we saw the added wings. I walked the boy past the Mountain Howitzers that had guarded the entrance for more than fifty years and up the grand staircase. We saw the cupola from the inside and noticed the indoor plumbing. I never dreamed I would see so many changes. I knew it was time then to honor my promise, time for me to start writing. I am one of the only ones left who can remember the early days, the days when Florida was just a "tadpole" and so was I.
