The coronation of Elizabeth II was televised. Senator Joseph McCarthy outraged many Americans when he claimed that former President Truman aided Communists. In science the structure of DNA was decoded in an historic genetic discovery. In fads and fashion 3-D movies became the rage. In sport Rocky Marciano twice defended his heavyweight crown. Maureen Connolly was the woman to win all four Grand Slam events in tennis in a single year. In golf Ben Hogan won the Masters, U. S. Open and the British Open. At the Academy Awards 'From Here To Eternity' gained four Oscars, Best Film, Best Director, Fred Zimmerman, Best Supporting Actor, Frank Sinatra, and Best Supporting Actress, Donna Reed. The Best Actor Award went to William Holden for 'Stalag 17' and Best Actress to Audrey Hepburn for 'Roman Holiday'.
