If you have not come across this publication before then stop and have a good read of this review and then take a look at this book. It's really good! This is the 13th annual edition of what is becoming a mature and useful reference work. Ideally it is for GPs but doctors wanting a general reference work will not be disappointed. Okay let's get some statistics out of the road, it is a big book and in terms of size provides value for money, it is hardback and runs for 1640 pages. There are about 300 contributors and there are roughly 1000 topics laid out alphabetically with 600 topics in expanded format and 400 topics in shorter format. In addition there are algorithms ,a medication guide and a CD ROM.It's an American book and if you have not figured it out then read the first topic, "abnormal pap smear" and you will see it's US origins. That is no bad thing and in fact the book is highly useful for a British doctor. The layout on the topics for the expanded section is easy on the eye. It is mainly in note form with a two page spread for each topic and each page is divided into three columns with headings such as basics, diagnosis and treatment. In the following page the other three headings are medication, follow up and miscellaneous. This means a subject can be rapidly refreshed and is excellent for a quick 2 minute read. The short topics are obviously briefer but still cover a good deal and the medication guide is useful but it carries American trade names.The content is written for a practical user rather than for an academic and so is at it's best when dealing with a specific patient problem and you want to read round a subject. The uniformity of the layout and note like presentation of the facts further emphasises the book's practicality.The index is pretty comprehensive and I used this book extensively as a primary medical resource for several months and it served my needs well. I suspect general physicians would find this helpful and doctors from other specialities looking for a general textbook would not be disappointed. I am also impressed that it is updated annually which is good though there is temptation to buy a copy every year, so you are up to date! (Dr Harry Brown, reproduced from univadis.co.uk)
