Synopsis
Iconic and never-before-seen archival photographs of the 20th-century supermodel Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-92) was a Swedish dancer, photographer, stylist and sculptor, but above all, she was one of the most acclaimed fashion models of the 20th century. She worked with the greatest fashion photographers of her time, including Richard Avedon, Fernand Fonssagrives, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, Georges Platt-Lynes and John Rawlings. She was, according to Alexander Liberman, the former artistic director of Vogue , the subject of the magazine's greatest photographs. Fashion Icon displays around 150 original vintage prints from her personal collection. Some of these images have never before been published, including a large number of photographs by Fernand Fonssagrives, her first husband, and more private portraits taken by Irving Penn. The volume features texts by writers Laurence Benaïm and Vince Aletti, as well as a conversation between Fonssagrives-Penn and photographer David Seidner., She's the woman perilously clinging to the Eiffel Tower, the mermaid in the Rochas dress, and the graceful model in Elsa Schiaparelli's "Lobster" dress: Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, a name inseparable from fashion photography. With her timeless elegance, she is at once the embodiment and apotheosis of fashion. An extraordinary presence, immortalised between the 1930s and 1950s by the world's greatest fashion photographers: Horst, Hoyningen-Huene, Blumenfeld, Dahl-Wolfe, Avedon, Penn, Fonssagrives... A dancer, model, photographer and sculptor, the multi-faceted Lisa is revealed here through a collection of personal prints, as intimate as they are fascinating., A compelling insight into the life of one of the most iconic models in the world of 20th-century fashion Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-1992) was a dancer, photographer, stylist and sculptor, but above all one of the most emblematic models of the 20th-century fashion world. She worked with the greatest fashion photographers of her time from 1935 to 1955: Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, Louise Dahl- Wolfe, Fernand Fonssagrives, Toni Frissel, Horst P. Horst, whose favourite model she was, George Hoyningen-Huene, Frances Mclaughlin-Gill, Irving Penn, Georges Platt-Lynes and John Rawlings. She was the first model to feature on the cover of Time magazine in September 1949. Wife of Irving Penn from 1950 until her death in 1992, she was, according to Alexander Liberman, artistic director of Vogue magazine, the subject of his greatest photographs. The book features around 150 original vintage prints from her personal collection. Some of these images were published in Vogue France, Vogue US or Harper's Bazaar , and many are previously unpublished, including a large number of photographs of Fernand Fonssagrives, her first husband, and more private portraits taken by Irving Penn.
