Synopsis
The Electric Life is the masterpiece of visionary French futurist, illustrator and satirist, Albert Robida. Written in 1893 as the culmination of his speculative fiction trilogy The Twentieth Century, the forerunner to today's graphic novel includes over 100 original sketches bringing life to a fantastic panorama of an imagined Paris of 1955 that hummed with airborne taxis, video courtship, and "miasmatic" armies armed with engineered plagues. His visions were so extravagant that many critics dismissed them as caricature. After all, he founded the publication of the same name La Caricature in 1880. The present volume differs from the scattered, often incomplete English versions that have circulated since the 1920s in three key respects: Newly complete and refined English translation; Refined Illustrations; Contextual Apparatus. This new rendering restores the unabridged 1893 French text, including dialogue cuts and parenthetical asides. The approach privileges Robida's nimble syntax and sly tonal shifts, neither Victorianising the idiom nor flattening it into slang.A concise critical introduction situates the novel among late-nineteenth-century futurisms and traces its influence through Art Deco, bandes dessinées, and contemporary graphic fiction. Footnotes identify historical figures, period slang, and political allusions likely unfamiliar to modern Anglophone readers, yet are numbered lightly so as not to arrest narrative flow. By re-publishing this modernized version of The Electric Life back into circulation with its satire intact, we invite dialogue between historians of technology, urbanists, gender-studies scholars, and visual-culture critics. Robida's Paris is a mirror-city in which each discipline can glimpse its own unfinished business. Robida, ever the gentleman satirist, seldom moralises outright. Yet buried in his frivolity lies a question that feels directed at us: Can a civilisation accelerate without unravelling? Our answer remains pending. While we deliberate-on screens, in legislatures, or amid electric storms of data-The Electric Life offers wit and perspective, and an infinitely enjoyable read.
