Das Museums Abtei Liesborn prasentiert in der Ausstellung Meisterwerke der klassischen Moderne. Die gezeigten 40 Werke, bei denen es sich um Leihgaben der Renate und Friedrich Johenning Stiftung handelt, veranschaulichen, wie vielfaltig die Wege in die Moderne waren. Dabei ging es vor allem darum, die subjektive Empfindung mit malerischen Mitteln auszudrucken sowie Seelenerlebnisse und das rein Intuitive in kunstlerische Form zu fassen. Ungemischte Farben, holzschnittartige Formen, Abkehr von der Zentralperspektive sowie die Reduktion und Vereinfachung von Motiven und Formen, waren beliebte Stilmittel des Expressionismus. Gegenstande wurden zu Farbflachen verformt und die Farbe zunehmend vom gegenstandlichen Motiv gelost. Nicht langer die naturgetreue Wiedergabe der Wirklichkeit, sondern die Welt hinter den Dingen wurde zum Gegenstand des neuen kunstlerischen Ausdrucks.
