Proteine sind ein sehr wichtiger Bestandteil aller Organismen. Mehr als die H lfte des Zell-Trockengewichts besteht im allgemeinen aus Protein, das f r den Aufbau und die Funktion eines jeden Organismus absolut notwendig ist. Dies wird verst ndlich, wenn man bedenkt, da z. B. Muskeln, Bindegewebe, Enzyme, Antik rper und viele andere Substanzen im Blut und Zellplasma zu den Eiwei stoffen oder Proteinen geh ren. Proteine sind lange Kettenmolek le mit einigen Hundert Kettengliedern, den Aminos uren. Es kommen insgesamt nur zwanzig verschiedene Amino- s uren in den Proteinen vor. Die Vielzahl der Proteine entsteht durch die unterschiedliche Reihenfolge der Aminos uren in den verschiedenen Protein- ketten. Diese Reihenfolge ist f r jedes Protein charakteristisch und durch das genetische Material, die Desoxyribonukleins ure (DNS) in den Chromo- somen, genau festgelegt. Die bertragung der genetischen Information von den Chromosomen im Zellkern zu den Orten der Proteinsynthese, den Ribosomen, im Zellplasma erfolgt durch die Boten-Nukleins uren. Diese dienen den Ribosomen als Bau- plan f r die Reihenfolge, in der die verschiedenen Aminos uren in die zu synthetisierende Proteinkette eingebaut werden. Der Vorgang der Protein- synthese ist relativ kompliziert. An ihm nehmen etwa einhundertsiebzig verschiedene Protein- bzw. RNS-Molek le teil, wovon ein Drittel Ribo- somen-Bausteine sind.
