Synopsis
In 1967, Joseph Maes, a Stockton CA resident and a Southern Ute Native American, was drafted at age 19 and served in Vietnam in the Wolfhound Unit, A Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Division. During his service, he was promoted to sergeant and was awarded Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His memoir was written more than 50 years after his return, and unabashedly recounts the feelings of a distressed youth in battle. This is no hero's tale; instead, it is a mental and emotional journey of a young man surviving by focusing on family and heritage. He writes of his bus ride to boot camp, the first day in-country, meeting local Vietnamese, and the many missions that burned holes in his brain. His is a warning tale of misery and mental anguish rather than a celebration of war.
