As issued by Mill Creek Entertainment, this historically-themed, five-part documentary series traces the gradual evolution of the airplane from the first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, through the rapid, deeply disturbing militarization of the airplane that transpired over the ensuing years. The program intercuts incisive narration with archival footage of planes, culled from a variety of sources. Of the included episodes, Episode 1, "The Pioneers," begin s in 1903 with Orville and Wilbur Wright, then follows the chronology of the airplane through World War I; Episode 2, "Monoplanes," examines how pilots in the Post-WW1 years managed to achieve many of the challenges set forth by aeronautic engineers; Episode 3, "The Struggle for Airspace," looks at how the Spanish Civil War served as a proving ground for the planes of the Third Reich, and how planes around the globe gained better performance as a product of militaristic involvements; and the final episode, "New Aircraft, New Weapons, New Frontiers," examines how WWII dramatically expanded the geographic boundaries of war, and thus made an indelible impact on the types of planes that needed to be enlisted.
