The book also examines the technologies that were developed or improved during this time; 1000 horsepower engines, eight-gun fighters, long-range heavy bombs, gun turrets, radar, and many others. The Phoney War from September 1939 to May 1940, gave the RAF time in which to complete a large part of the expansion programme.
