Il campione del mondo Isidore Weiss, il "Napoleone della dama", aveva una posizione eccezionale tra i grandi maestri della dama. Anche oggi che le sue partite sono ormai obsolete e il piano di gioco in molte di esse è stato completamente confutato da nuove teorie, quando vengono riproposte, si rimane sempre colpiti dal fascino di un talento naturale, dall'ampia impostazione strategica, dall'occhio attento all'unica debolezza nel controgioco, e non da ultimo dal fine senso del gioco, che permetteva a questo maestro francese di orientarsi in situazioni non familiari. Gli piaceva sorprendersi con le mosse, anche nelle sue partite, e spesso faceva mosse che molti altri avrebbero fortemente disapprovato. Queste mosse sorprendenti si possono trovare in tutte le sue costruzioni, specialmente nelle sue partite finali. La combinazione di gioco rischiosa dava a Weiss l'opportunità di compiere brillanti prodezze d'ingegno. Dov'è il giocatore che ancora oggi osa giocare le aperture di Weiss, da quando il mostro della teoria ha preso possesso del gioco? Se si confrontano le partite di Weiss di più di 100 anni fa con il gioco di posizione attuale, emerge certamente ciò che è stato vinto, ma anche ciò che è stato perso. Il romanticismo predomina nel primo, il secondo è un prodotto studiato, spesso arido e comprensibile solo all'iniziato. Che meraviglioso valore promozionale conservano quelle vecchie partite!
