    About this product

    Product Information

The House of the Dead is a rail shooter light gun game that gave horror fans a taste of the zombie apocalypse. Originally developed as an arcade game, it was released for the Sega Saturn in March 1998 as well as for the PC. The Sega Saturn version stays truer to the original with its use of a light gun to stop approaching zombies. The game follows two playable characters as they navigate the house of horrors. Thomas Rogan, a young AMS agent, is drawn to the Curien mansion when he receives a desperate phone call from his fiance, Sophie. There have been reports of mysterious disappearances at the mansion, and he travels there to investigate with his partner, Agent G. Upon arriving at the house, however, he finds the place has been completely taken over by terrible creatures. Sophie meets him at the front of the mansion, but she’s soon abducted by a winged abomination. Dr. Roy Curien, a biochemist and geneticist and the owner of the Curien mansion, was searching for information on the nature of life and death, and his experiments grew gradually more gruesome. As he became more and more obsessed with his research, he created monsters that he released into the halls and rooms of his home and laboratory. Now, Thomas and Agent G must fight their way through Curien’s experimental subjects in order to rescue Sophie and stop the nightmare altogether. Players have the option of playing as Thomas or Agent G, with the dialogue changing depending on the character chosen. Each character has a pistol, which can hold six rounds and can be reloaded by shooting outside of the screen. You lose health when you take damage or when you shoot a civilian, though you can replenish it again by picking up first aid packs scattered throughout the levels. For an additional bonus, shoot any breakable objects that you come across to pick up any special items that may be located inside. The gameplay is affected by your choices, as well as the choices of your affiliates. You have the option of rescuing or ignoring any civilians you find in the house, although they may give you boosts if you help them. Sophie’s fate also rests in your hands. How well you do throughout the game decides whether she lives or dies. The House of the Dead received general praise as an arcade game, and when it was ported over to consoles, it brought this fan-favorite shooter into gamers’ homes. The Sega Saturn version comes with extra content, including the ability to choose your character and a new boss battle mode in which you can battle the game bosses. Some of the music has also been remixed, giving the game a slightly different feel from the original. With its gritty action and grisly visuals, the House of the Dead stands out from other video games and remains a favorite decades later.
