Uber Cagliostros Medizin kann nicht allzu viel Neues ausgesagt werden. Viele Autoren der uber 500 Titel umfassenden Cagliostriana haben sich mehr oder weniger ausfuhrlich zu seiner Medizin geaussert. Vergleichbares gilt nicht fur Cagliostros Pharmazie. Es ist zwar gut bekannt, dass er seine eigene Pharmakopoe besass, seine Medikamente teils von Apothekern herstellen liess, gewisse Rezepte streng geheim hielt und die Arzneien in seiner Heilkunde die Hauptrolle spielten. Uber die Heilmittel selbst und ihre Zutaten, Kompositionen, Formen, Herstellungsvorschriften und Indikationen weiss man jedoch wenig. 1847 wurden neun Rezepte publiziert, die seither in vielen Buchern und Aufsatzen uber den Arzt und Magier rezipiert werden. Da es nur wenige sind und da ausser Namen und Zutaten nichts Weiteres vermerkt ist, vermogen sie keineswegs ein vollstandiges und scharfes Bild von seiner Pharmakopoe zeichnen. Dass im Basler Staatsarchiv cagliostrische Rezepte liegen, wurde schon mehrfach vermutet. Das Basler Kaufleute-Ehepaar Jakob (1742-1802) und Gertrud (1752-1791) Sarasin-Battier legte eine umfassende pharmazeutische Rezeptsammlung an, die heute vom Staatsarchiv aufbewahrt wird. 53 der vielen Vorschriften konnen eindeutig Cagliostro zugewiesen werden. Im Kern der Studie stehen diese Rezepte, sie werden einer pharmaziehistorischen Analyse unterzogen. Die Edition von zwolf ausgewahlten und naher in Betracht stehenden Rezepten ist Bestandteil davon., Cagliostros Tun war privilegiertes Thema der aufkeimenden Massenmedien der Aufklarung. Als historischer Akteur hat der Arzt und Alchemist wenig Kontur. Die Urteile schwanken zwischen Scharlatan und Prophet. Dass er eigene Arzneien hatte, ist bekannt. Die wenigen veroffentlichten Rezepte werden in der Pharmaziegeschichte als Inbegriff fur Geheimmittel gehandelt - das waren Eigenpraparate bekannter Arzte. Von einer Rezeptsammlung, die im Basler Staatsarchiv aufbewahrt wird, konnten etliche Stucke Cagliostro zugeschrieben werden. Diese Formeln ermoglichen es, von seiner Pharmakopoe zu sprechen und sie der pharmaziehistorischen Analyse zu unterziehen. 13 Rezepte sind hier ediert. Ihre Bewertung kann dazu beitragen, ein differenzierteres Bild einer der umstrittensten Figuren der europaischen Geschichte zu zeichnen.
