Irish folk rockers The Men They Couldn't Hang formed in 1984, garnering a following with their harder interpretations of traditional songs, in the vein of fellow Irishmen the Pogues. TMTCH were signed by Elvis Costello to his Demon Records label in 1985, which released their debut album, NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CANDLES. With the punk-sounding voice of Stefan Cush narrating, the left-leaning politics of the band were illustrated in such songs as "Ironmasters," which addressed the struggle between unions and industry. The group went on to be signed to a major label, becoming more popular with each consecutive release, and increasing their fan base while developing a more traditional rock & roll sound. Eventually disbanding in 1991, they played a final, highly emotional farewell show at London's Town and Country Club, a major event recorded in this release. They performed many of their key songs, including their version of Eric Bogle's "The Green Fields Of France," "Grave Robbing In The Gig Harbour," "Company Town," "Going Back To Coventry," and "A Night To Remember," among many others.
