ASUS combined power and agility to superb effect with the micro-ATX (mATX) form factor Gryphon TUF Z87 motherboard, not unlike the eponymous creature of legend. The Gryphon Z87 uses ASUS’s The Ultimate Force (TUF) architecture, which puts board architecture between that of consumer strength and industrial strength – the longevity and stability of server-grade components combined with the usability and flexibility of a high-powered gaming board. Power equals heat, and the Gryphon TUF Z87 board layout provides ample room for six four-pin fan headers: two to cool the CPU, one to cool the chassis, one on the right to cover the SATA and power connectors, and one on the bottom to cover the PCI sockets. The board has supplementary three-pin fan header dedicated to cooling the ASUS Thermal Armor Kit, a steel motherboard cover that dissipates heat, improves air flow, prevents bending, and repels dust. You need a lot of processing power to get the most out of a high-end motherboard, and ASUS designed the Gryphon TUF Z87 motherboard around an Intel LGA 1150 socket making it compatible with Intel’s high-performance CPUs. Compatible Intel CPU series include the Xeon, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, Pentium Dual-Core, and Celeron Dual-Core.If you plan on building an enthusiast rig, the i5, i7, and Xeon CPU series will meet and exceed the demands of high-intensity gaming. The ASUS Gryphon’s Intel Z87 chipset supports Intel TurboBoost technology 2.0, allowing for ferocious overclocking speeds in fourth generation and higher Intel system processors, and Rapid Storage technology, which allows for faster access to data image and video files and provides protection against hard disk drive (HDD) failure. The Gryphon motherboard’s Z87 chipset supports NVIDIA’s SLI and AMD’s Crossfire X, technologies that accelerate graphics engines and allow up to four graphics processing units (GPU) to run simultaneously. SLI and Crossfire X direct graphics management to their own processors, allowing the CPU to conserve resources and push power to other applications as needed. With SLI and CrossFireX, you can run up to four displays at the same time, play 4K games and videos, and experience gaming at the highest frame rate with the graphics card settings tuned to maximum. The Gryphon TUF Z87 motherboard has four dual-channel DDR3 DIMM slots supports up to 32GB of RAM memory at 1333MHz to 3000MHz, and six onboard SATA 6 Gbps (RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10) connectors support mass memory storage devices, such as Solid State Drives (SSD) and HDDs. Expansion slots (video, memory, graphics, and Wi-Fi) include two PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16, and x8-x8), one PCIe 2.0 x4, and one PCIe 2.0 x1. The TUF Z87 motherboard provides 12 input-output connections: three onboard thermal sensor connectors, one onboard USB 3.0 header that supports four SuperSpeed 3.0 ports, one onboard USB 2.0 header that supports four USB 2.0 ports, one Intel I217V Ethernet output, one optical SPID output, one HDMI output, and one DVi output. The Z87 motherboard features USB 3.0 Boost, which increases data transfer speeds by 170 percent over normal USB 3.0 data transfer speeds, which already transfer data at a blazing 5 GB per second. The ASUS TUF Z87 motherboard meets and exceeds the power and performance required for an enthusiast level gaming system. Its micro-ATX form factor provides enough space in the computer case for the high-powered components and cooling system the Z87 needs to perform its best.
